World Milk Producers:
European Union leads the world in Milk Production by producing about 120 million metric tons. Other prominent milk producers are India, United States, Russia & Brazil

Major Importers:
International dairy trade is mostly in manufactured products, primarily butter, cheese, and milk powders. Historically, internationally traded products have been equivalent to about 5 percent of world milk production.
Major importers are Mexico, Japan, Canada, China, Korea, South East Asia, South America, Middle East, Caribbean & African Countries.

About half of the world’s recorded butter exports come from New Zealand alone. The major butter importers are Russia, the Middle East and North Africa, and the EU (for fixed negotiated amounts from New Zealand).

The EU remains the largest exporter of cheese. Japan, the United States, the EU, and sometimes Russia are the largest importers. The Middle East and North Africa is another important market, particularly for some cheese types.

Milk powders are very widely imported, particularly by tropical countries. Most East and Southeast Asia countries import significant amounts of milk powders.

Whey Products: Trade in whey products (dry whey, modified whey products, and whey protein concentrate) has grown substantially. These products, byproducts of
cheese production, can offer almost all of the nutrition of skim milk powder at a very low price. USA is the largest exporter of whey.
